WOW FACTOR - McCall Received Top Honors at NATSSA “Singer of the Year” Competition

Dorian McCall

Dorian McCall, a 3rd year MM opera performance candidate from Houston, Texas, took 3rd place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATSAA) Regional Singer of the Year Competition.

The NATSAA competition, held each November, selects, through a series of elimination rounds on the district, regional and national levels, singers whose artistry indicates that they are ready for a professional career and to encourage them toward that goal with a cash prize and the opportunity for performance engagements.

Thousands of college students participate in chapter, district, and regional auditions each year, providing students with constructive feedback on their progress and deemed by members as one of the most important activities NATSAA organizes.

“What I personally gained from this experience was quite significant. Utilizing the new colors and ability of my voice with the guidance of my teacher, fine tuning and making music with my coach, collaborating with my dear friend and fellow musician, all coalesced at the right time. I was able to walk into a relatively high stakes situation with my wits about me and a calm that allowed me to focus on storytelling and gave freedom to the body and voice to do what it does best.”

"I’m so touched by this honor and to be here tonight."

“I am such a proud Oklahoman – I always have been, ask anyone who knows me – born and raised here. I went to the University of Oklahoma, and when I first moved … I met a lot of people – a lot of those coastal people – who seem to be very unaware of this thriving and rich artistic and creative community that I knew and I know in Oklahoma. I feel like in a way I’ve kind of stepped into a role of advocate for our great state because I was so excited to share my experience because I knew firsthand the amazing talent and the work that is cultivated right here. It’s given me even more Oklahoma pride to be able to share my story."

“I have to attribute my entire being and reason, experience in Oklahoma with the unbelievable teachers that I had here.”

-By Brandy McDonnell, The Oklahoman newspaper, April 10, 2017
