OU CESL Students

OU Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) Students

Applying to a degree program while in CESL:

  1. Undergraduate Students submit your application to the University of Oklahoma before the deadline for your desired term.
Graduate Students refer to graduate programs and deadlines.
  2. Undergraduate Students submit all required credentials to the Office of Admissions.
Graduate Students: many graduate departments have their own requirements, so contact your graduate department directly for more information on supplemental requirements.

As a current CESL student, you have likely not yet fulfilled the English Proficiency requirement

  • If you have fulfilled this requirement in any of the ways detailed in the English Proficiency Requirements, you may apply to the future term of your choice.

  • If you have not fulfilled the English Proficiency requirement:
Have you earned at least a 61 on the TOEFL IBT or a 5.5 on the IELTS?

    YES:
You may fulfill the English Proficiency requirements by doing BOTH of the following:

    1. Successfully complete two additional and consecutive sessions of Advanced Level coursework at CESL.
    2. Then, once these two sessions are complete you MUST enter your degree program in the adjacent term.

Scenario 1 – If you complete both Summer sessions after earning a 61 on the TOEFL IBT or a 5.5 on the IELTS, you must enter in the Fall Term.

Scenario 2 – If you complete one Summer session and one Fall session after earning a 61 on the TOEFL IBT or a 5.5 on the IELTS you must remain in CESL for the additional Fall session so that you may enter in Spring.

**You may NOT exit the CESL program for a session, THEN enter in the next academic term. Therefore, you should take these factors into consideration and plan your CESL coursework and application to a degree program accordingly, including your term of entry.

    NO:
You must attend CESL until you earn at least a 61 on the TOEFL IBT or a 5.5 on the IELTS. Then, see instructions above for additional information.

Academic Admissibility

Current or incoming CESL students who apply for University admission may be deemed ‘Academically Admissible’ to their proposed undergraduate or graduate degree programs after the required application review. Please note that the application review process for undergraduate and graduate applicants do vary.

If determined to be ‘Academically Admissible’, CESL students will be admitted to their proposed undergraduate or graduate degree program upon satisfaction of the English proficiency requirement and submission of the required financial support documentation. Admission cannot be granted before completion of the English Proficiency requirement.

Be aware that academic integrity issues that are added to your permanent record at CESL will be reported to the Office of Admissions and may affect your admission to the university.

Graduate Applicants – Correspondences from your department or a faculty member do NOT constitute an official offer of admission from The University of Oklahoma. Rather, these are simply notifications that you have been recommended for admission. You must be approved for admission by the Graduate College in addition to your academic unit. Only the Office of Graduate Admissions may extend an official offer of admission to The University of Oklahoma, Graduate College.

If you are not a current CESL student and are interested in joining the program, visit the OU CESL website to find application and schedule information.
