Tips for Finding a Research Opportunity outside GCoE

Tips for Finding a Research Opportunity outside GCoE

Check the GCoE Research Blog

When GCoE receives notices of opportunities, usually for summer research opportunities, we post them to our blog. You can search by topic or other keywords such as Florida or California if you are interested in an experience in one of those states.

Outside OU Research Opportunities

Search Google Scholar

Search Google Scholar for topics that interest you and find out who has published work in that area recently. From their papers, you can see where they do their research. Look at that organization’s website to see if they have Summer Research Opportunities or email the researcher to see if they are looking for research assistants.

Search National Science Foundation

Search National Science Foundation or National Institutes of Health websites for universities or departments who have active awards for summer research opportunities. Their databases can be tricky to navigate, watch for a seminar explaining how to do it or see the help pages at their sites.

Gallogly Student Newsletter

Watch the Gallogly Student Newsletter, electronic bulletin boards, or emails from your program for announcements of guest speakers. Attend, pay attention, ask meaningful questions, and introduce yourself afterwards. They may have openings or know someone in the fields who does.

Meet with Faculty

Meet with an OU faculty member working in a related area during their office hours. Sometimes they can introduce you to colleagues elsewhere.
