About DSA

OFFERED ON CAMPUS, ONLINE OR AS A COMBINATION

The University of Oklahoma is proud to offer a Graduate Certificate in Data Science and Analytics, a Master of Science in Data Science and Analytics, and Dual Degrees. Current OU students can add a dual degree or our graduate certificate to their current program.

Each curriculum offered merges expertise and knowledge from the Schools of Computer Science and Industrial and Systems Engineering.  Students will develop a strong foundation in the theory and application of data science that will give them the skills to harness big data.

Graduates will have the skills to design and build tools to extract, assimilate and analyze data, and the systems understanding to predict and enhance future performance.  Please read on explore the right option for you.

Master of Science Program Structure

The program is designed to be completed in only 14 months if you are attending full time, although we do have part time options available.  Our classes are offered on-campus, online, or a combination to best suit your needs.  Non-thesis students complete 33 credit hours, while thesis students complete 30 credit hours.  All students complete the core courses for 20 credit hours.

Below is the degree structure:

DSA Core (20 hours)

DSA 5005 - Computing Structures

DSA 5013 - Fundamentals of Engineering Statistical Analysis

DSA 4513 - Database Management Systems

DSA 5103 - Intelligent Data Analytics

DSA 4413 - Algorithm Analysis

DSA 5113 - Advanced Analytics & Metaheuristics

NON-THESIS (13 hours)
Electives - 9 hours
DSA 5900 - Engineering Practicum - 4 hours
OR
THESIS (10 hours)
Electives - 3 hours
DSA 5900 - Engineering Practicum - 1 hour
Research Project - 6 hours

Pathways to Graduation

You can begin the program in the Summer, Fall or Spring, and attend classes full or part time.  Here are some examples of your pathway through the program to graduation.

Graduate Certificate Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate requires 15 credit hours, with 6-8 credit hours of core course work, and 7-9 credit hours of elective courses.  The Certificate program can be completed on-campus, online, or a combination.  Students can begin the Certificate program in spring, summer or fall.

Below is the certificate structure:

DSA Core (6-8 hours)

DSA 5013 - Fundamentals of Engineering Statistical Analysis

DSA 5103 - Intelligent Data Analytics

DSA 5113 - Advanced Analytics & Metaheuristics

DSA 5005 - Computing Structures

DSA 4513 - Database Management Systems

Electives (7-9 hours)

Dual Degree

Dual degree programs allow students to pursue degrees simultaneously in two fields of study. To obtain a dual degree, the student must satisfy the admission, course, and examination requirements of both programs.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. The student must be admitted to both programs before 12 credit hours of coursework have been completed in either program.
  2. All deficiencies must be completed and all degree requirements, including research tools, foreign languages, non-thesis examination and thesis, must be met for both programs.
  3. Up to 20 percent of the total graduate credit hours required for both degrees taken individually may be double counted, e.g., counted as credit for both programs.
  4. The double-counted courses must be appropriate for each degree.
  5. The student must graduate with both degrees in the same semester.

Current OU students can now add a dual degree late in their program with the approval of both departments.  However, the student still must graduate with both degrees in the same semester.  If they add a dual degree towards the end of their 1st program, they will have to push the graduation date of that program until they are able to finish the 2nd
