Philip Nguyen

Philip Nguyen is chief technical advisor in the production enhancement applied sciences group at the Halliburton Technology Center in Houston, Texas. He has more than thirty years of diverse engineering experience and innovation in the upstream oil and gas industry. He is a key innovator and contributor to numerous Halliburton products and process developments that are currently being commercialized and applied in operations. His current work focuses on innovating and developing methods and processes for mitigating/preventing emissions of carbon dioxide and methane while providing energy to power the oilfield equipment.  He assists field engineers with their well treatment designs, as well as trains, advises, and mentors the young engineers and scientists at Halliburton.

Nguyen joined Halliburton in 1989 after receiving a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical Engineering from the University of Oklahoma. He holds almost 400 granted U.S. patents and has published more than 100 technical papers and articles.  He was the recipient of the 2007 World Oil Innovative Thinkers Award.  He currently serves as a technical editor on the editorial review committee for the Society of Petroleum Engineers Production & Operations Journal.

Dr. Marilyn Grass Culp was born in Bethany, Oklahoma, to Buster and Margaret Grass and quickly distinguished herself as a caring friend, willing leader and exceptional student where she graduated valedictorian from Putnam City West High School in 1984 as a National Merit finalist and Fleming Scholar with the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation. Marilyn enrolled at OU and continued to distinguish herself graduating with her Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering while being recognized as an R. Boyd Gunning Scholar, member of the President’s Leadership Class and the Chemical Engineering Program of Excellence, winner of the Rita H. Lottinville Prize and recognized as the Outstanding Senior in the College of Engineering.

Upon graduation from OU, Marilyn married her husband Brian Culp and moved to Dallas where she attended the University of Texas‐Southwestern Medical School and graduated with her Doctor of Medicine with clinical honors in pediatrics and internal medicine in 1993.

Following graduation from medical school, Dr Culp served her internship and residency in Family medicine with OU College of Medicine in Tulsa and has practiced in Tulsa as a board- certified family physician since graduation from residency in 1996. Dr. Culp served as president of Rock Springs Medical Center, her own private medical practice, for six years before merging her practice with Utica Park Clinic and the Hillcrest Medical System where she currently serves as the Family Medicine Section Chief and was named as one of Oklahoma’s Outstanding Doctors by Oklahoma Magazine in 2019.

Dr Culp and her husband Brian have two children – Phillip and Patrick. Phillip was born during Marilyn’s senior year of medical school and Patrick was born during her second year of residency. Phillip is now also a family medicine physician, graduating from the OU College of Medicine in 2021 and serving as a Captain in the U.S. Army, completing his internship at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Phillip is married to Rebekah Moorman Culp, R.N., who is busy chasing after the latest love of Marilyn’s life ‐‐‐ her one‐year‐old granddaughter Nora. Marilyn and Brian’s younger son Patrick is a mechanical engineer who works for United Launch Alliance and is a stress analyst for the new Vulcan rocket that will take astronauts to the space station in future years (yes, he’s a rocket scientist!).

Dr Culp has served on medical mission trips to Grenada and has provided medical care with Operation Serve International in Mexico City. She serves on the OU Gallogly College of Engineering Dean’s Advisory Board for Diversity and has opened her home to 77 guests from the OU Summer Bridge Engineering Program. She feels as though every student is special and has a gift and talent to cultivate and share with the world.

Dr. Culp is a member of the Oklahoma State Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians and American Indian Science and Engineering Society. Dr Culp earned her black belt in karate and serves on the Board of the Oklahoma Karate Association promoting physical fitness and sportsmanship. In her spare time, she enjoys designing jewelry for the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and organizes a yearly fundraiser for Tulsa Advocates for Foster Children.
