Review: 9 out of 10
Trompe le Monde would be the Pixies final album together.  Released in September 1992 right at the start of Nirvanamania (on a song, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", that Kurt Cobain admitted was a ripoff of the Pixies), the band would break up within months amid feuding between Kim Deal and Black Francis.  Trompe le Monde is often scoffed at by Pixies fans, but I like it a lot.  There are several songs "Alec Eiffel", "Planet of Sound", "U-Mass", "Subbacultcha", and "D=rate x time" that show that the Pixies could still rock with the best of them.  Lyrically, it is perhaps my favorite album.  "Subbacultcha" and "Motorway to Roswell" are two of my favorite Pixies songs on any album.  The latter concerns space and aliens, a theme that dominates the record, as it increasingly obsessed Black Francis at the time.  Forget what you've heard and listen to this album with an open mind!
