WHAT IS HYPERSTUDIO?

HyperStudio is a multi-media development software package that allows you to create multi-media presentations easily and quickly. It is similar to other products such as "HyperCard" and "Digital Chisel."

Like "HyperCard," HyperStudio arranges your presentation on a series of digital displays that are called "cards" in groups that are called "stacks." You can visualize this by thinking of the HyperStudio stack as a literal "stack of cards." Each card has information on it and when you systematically cycle through the cards, you see that information.

A HyperStudio stack is similar but has some important advantages that traditional index cards do not:

• HyperStudio cards can contain multi-media elements. It is impossible to place a movie on an index card, but placing one on a HyperStudio card requires only a few clicks of the mouse. You can include sound (either stock, recorded yourself or from a CD) as well.
• HyperStudio cards allow for dynamic hyperlinking. You can link one card to several others, allowing your students to view the cards in whatever way they choose. This type of dynamic hyperlinking is consistent with current learning theory and makes the experience more interesting for the user.

STARTING A STACK

To start the HyperStudio Application. on the computer you are working on, find the HyperStudio program - its icon is similar to the example below. Double click and the program will open.

When the program is open, you will see the startup screen, which looks like this.

When the program has loaded, a default stack will appear. Click the New Stack button and then click "Yes" or "OK" to any messages which appear. 

You are now faced with an empty page. What are you going to do with it?

Start by becoming familiar with the menu bar across the top of the screen

 

Now you are ready to learn what the Tools Menu can do, To start, click and hold your mouse button on the "Tools" menu. The Tool Menu is a "tear off" menu and can be moved onto the desktop by simply holding the mouse button down and moving the mouse down and over to the side of your blank card.

 

You can also do the same "tear off" method with the Color Menu. Click on the Colors Menu & continue holding the mouse button down, then drag the color menu over to the side of your card so that it does not obstruct it, or the tool menu.

You will notice that the cursor is shaped like a little hand with the index finger extended. This indicates that the program is in "browse mode." That is what you want for now.
