Q: Why did you choose to run for Miss Hispanic OU 2021?

Gonzalez-Vega: I realized how I could potentially have an impact on my community in a positive way. There is so much room for growth within OU and the neighboring communities as far as inclusivity and equity for all. I had a desire to use my voice to shine light on issues that are often cast aside. MMHOU was more than just pretty dresses and a performance on stage. I am actively working to make a change in my community and represent it in other areas on campus.

Q: What did it feel like to earn this title?

Gonzalez-Vega: It was one of the most surreal moments in my entire college career. When I heard my name, I was in awe. All the countless hours poured into preparation were well worth it. I immediately thought of my mom and all the sacrifices she made for me to be standing on that stage. Culture is a such a large portion of my identity, and it was a beautiful feeling to know I not only would represent it on campus, but that I made those who came before me proud.

Q: What is the inspiration behind your platform, “Prosperidad” and what do you hope to accomplish?

Gonzalez-Vega: The inspiration behind “Prosperidad” is really my college experience and how much I’ve grown since freshman year. As a Latin woman and freshman in STEM, it was difficult for me to feel at home at times or that I could contribute my thoughts and ideas in a professional setting. My goal is to spark STEM interest in the minds of our nation’s future leaders. Meeting Latinas in this field made me realize that it is possible to thrive and succeed in STEM, and I want to provide that reassurance for the youth in my community.

Q: Do you have any advice for Latinx high school students who are thinking of applying to OU?

Gonzalez-Vega: You belong here. We may all have different—or sometimes similar— backgrounds, but there is a community here at OU that wants to grow with you and see you succeed! As a freshman, I was scared to put myself out there. I wish that someone would’ve told me sooner that I should be proud of who I am, where I come from, and that I can truly make a difference on this campus. There are a multitude of opportunities on campus, there is truly somewhere to call home here! Be true to yourself and know that you can achieve anything.
