First Generation College Celebration Day

First Generation Day is celebrated annually on November 8 to commemorate the signing of the Higher Education Act (“HEA”) of 1965 by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson. Many of the HEA’s programs, particularly the Trio Programs, promote postsecondary access, retention, and completion for today’s limited-income, first-generation college students.

To celebrate and empower first-generation students, OU hosts a resource fair for current and incoming students to promote resources available to students during their time at OU.

Tomás Rivera Educational Empowerment (TREE) Conference

The TREE Conference is one of the largest high school educational empowerment conference in Oklahoma for students from multiple backgrounds. The goal of the conference is to inform first-generation high school seniors of the numerous resources available to assist them as they prepare for the next step in life.

This conference is named in honor of Dr. Tomás Rivera, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, who grew up working alongside his family as a migrant worker and who was later named the first minority chancellor at the University of California Riverside.
